I am an experienced Level Designer, and Environment Artist in Salt Lake City. I’ve decided that I need to escape from Utah, and relocate to the LA area to be near family, and to just feel normal again. My recent projects include work on the upcoming Twisted Metal for PS3, as well as the upcoming Sky Legends Unity MMO. I am currently employed at Smart Bomb Interactive as Lead Level Designer.
I have worked at three game studios. All three have been Maya houses, so I am very proficient with Autodesk Maya. About a year ago, I discovered, and instantly fell in love with Luxology modo. I am using modo as my main modeler at SBI, but I try to drop into Maya frequently so that I don’t end up rusty on the industry standard.
For the last year, I have been working exclusively with the Unity game engine. My studio has several Unity-based games on the back burner, with our current primary focus being Sky Legends. I absolutely adore Unity. It may not have the performance yet of Unreal, but the user experience and workflow is just brilliant. I maintain a personal Unity Pro license, and look forward to each new release.
At Beyond Games, we had an in-house engine with a proprietary editor that included a rather powerful visual-based scripting system. Previously, at Smart Bomb, we used our own next-gen engine dubbed “WindowStorm” by the users that had to navigate the tool’s many, many floating windows. At Eat Sleep Play, we worked entirely in Maya. Their engine was built on top of Maya, leveraging the powerful Outliner, and Maya’s extensibility. Maya was our game editor.
I’m really not sure whether to call myself a Level Designer, or an Environment Artist, because I am pretty much both at Smart Bomb. We have two level guys, myself and one other. He and I split the level workload. We own our own levels from blockout to completion. We are responsible for the design, art, and FX. We are a two man level department.
My strengths are strong design and communication skills, and the modeling and texturing skills to take my level designs to final, shipping state.
